All About Living in Nederland, CO
Nederland is a Statutory Town which was established in 1885, and is situated near the Continental Divide and Barker Meadow Reservoir in the mountains of southwest Boulder County, Colorado. During the 1850s, it started as a trading post between European settlers and Ute Indians. The town first boomed when gold, silver and tungsten were discovered near the mines of Caribou and then Eldora. Today it is as famous as a gateway to outdoor activity in the Indian Peaks Wilderness, Rocky Mountain National Park, Roosevelt National Forest and Peak Wilderness. Nederland is located 15 miles southwest of Boulder, 38 miles south of Estes Park and 50 miles northwest of Denver.
Nederland is a unique town with a rich history and tradition of mining and music, and considers its future to be the linchpin of the Peak to Peak Community. This is not an average small town, because its distinctive features include interesting shops, amazing natural beauty, locals who are peculiarly friendly and welcoming, as well as a vibrant local music scene. Whether you live here or work here, the quality of life and well-being is extremely high.
If you are looking for a simple mountain lifestyle flanked by the Continental Divide to the west and the facilities of Boulder within easy driving distance to the east, you should really check out Nederland. The town was named by a Dutch mining company and literally means the “the lowlands” which is curious for a mountain town. However it gets its name from the fact that people would come down the mountain from the silver mining town of Caribou to visit.
Because of its relaxed and laid-back lifestyle, there has always been an easy relationship between the locals and the hippies who used to visit in the 1960s and 1970s. They were attracted here by the fine musical events held every year, the Colorado Music & Arts Festival (the famous NedFest) which takes place on the last weekend of August with bluegrass and jazz music, artists shows, camping and dancing. It is held on the shores of Barker Meadow Reservoir in Nederland, Colorado which is just 17 miles west of Boulder, Colorado. Over the years, Nederland has prospered outside the small town and you will find many subdivisions of newer homes. These are modern and contemporary with outstanding views of the snowcapped mountains and are available for prices ranging from $250,000 to millions of dollars. Other major events hosted by Nederland include the Miners Day celebration, and Frozen Dead Guy Days which have really put Nederland on the map.
