Birthday Presents Have Gone To Dogs...Literally

We are fortunate enough to be able to provide our children with buckets of LEGOs and more American Dolls than I'm willing to admit. When it came time for my twin's 8th birthday I gave them a choice. They could have 8 friends each at their Slackline party in our backyard and accept gifts or they could invite as many as they wanted (within reason!) and accept donations for the charity of their choice.

One of my prouder mommy moments...they chose their friends and Boulder Human Society over birthday presents. This is only made more impressive by the fact they agreed! We've adopted several of our pets from Boulder Humane Society and randomly visit the cats and dogs there just because we can. It was a natural choice for them.

Let's be honest, most kids don't need more toys. I always feel terrible asking parents to buy a gift (or TWO!) to attend a party. Sure, maybe it's a little mommy dearest, but I've accepted my role as Miss. Hannigan with gusto! Just kidding...sort of.

It's tradition to get gifts on your birthday and believe me, Mom, Dad and the grandparents always make sure that's taken care of so I'm not a total Scrooge. However, what is really to be gained by more toys? More to store? More to clean up? More to cry over when they break?

Huge kudos to all the kids who attended, who by the way kicked my booty on the slackline. They showed up with TONS of fun stuff. They brought cases of dog food, towels and sheets, bowls and leashes and "Look What The Cat Dragged In," A Bret Michael's cat toy. Thank you Spencer!

Boulder Humane Society was so amazing as we brought in box after box of donations. They gushed over my children who beamed with pride. They even sent a thank you note to my kids!

It may seem like a difficult sell, but giving them a choice made it pretty easy. I have a feeling we'll be doing this year after year!
