What are you doing on Sunday, April 27th? Well, we can tell you what you could be doing. Head to Pearl Street in Boulder for the annual Tulip, Fairy and Elf Festival. The event takes place on the Pearl Street Mall between 13th and 15th Streets. A performance stage will be set up on the 1300 block of Pearl where entertainment will be scheduled throughout the day. The festival runs from 1pm-5pm. Remember, you can park in downtown Boulder’s parking garages free of charge every Saturday and Sunday!
Pearl Street Mall has been an important piece of Boulder’s history for decades. Luckily, we’ve come a long way from the rickety, wooden sidewalks put up by the original Pearl Street merchants. Today’s pedestrian mall is easy to navigate. Boulder historian Silvia Pettem said it best, “Pearl Street, once Boulder’s commercial artery, has become its cultural heart and soul.” What better place to celebrate spring? The tulip gardens alone are worth the trip!
A favorite of the festival for adults and children alike is always the parade. It begins in front of the courthouse and will be led by the Tulip Fairy, of course. Find a comfy spot to sit and watch the fairies pass by as they help you celebrate spring, Boulder style. The parade starts at 3:30pm. This gives you ample time before and after to appreciate everything the festival has to offer. Let your children plant some seeds, make fairy wands and join in on the spring craft sessions. Need to let go of a little stress? Challenge a friend to a foam sword fight and battle it out on the courthouse lawn. Be sure to visit all the booths. You’ll find a range of fun, from sampling baby food to getting a chance to blow a giant bubble.
What is so special about the tulips on Pearl Street? The tulips found on Pearl are imported directly from Holland. Not only are these tulips selected especially for the flower beds here, but the selection changes yearly. Every fall, all of the tulip bulbs are dug up, put in bags, and given away free to the public. Each spring, the new tulips show off their many colors and varieties. Did you know there are over 70 types of tulips? This means each year you get to experience a new tulip display as you walk the Pearl Street Mall. Get your camera ready and come enjoy spring on Pearl!
